Marbella is set to be the first tourist destination in Andalucía to have free internet hotspots on its streets, with plans in place to have the service up and running by Easter 2015. This will make a huge difference to tourists in the Costa del Sol area as well as being a positive for Marbella residents. Due to the fact that it is free for all to use, the new wireless connectivity will make it possible to enjoy that famous Marbella café society and work, surf the net or stay in touch with friends online.
On San Pedro Alcántara’s brand new boulevard there are five connection points that are already linked up and ready to use, with plans for a further 17 hotspots to be added in the following places:
- Marbella old town
- San Pedro Alcántara old town
- Parque de Los Tres Jardines in San Pedro
- Plaza de Antonio Banderas in Puerto Banús
- La Campana in Nueva Andalucía
- Puerto Deportivo Virgen del Carmen
- Parts of Marbella’s paseo marítimo beach walk area
- Las Chapas
The Internet speed will be 256kb per second and there is a time limit of one hour per day per person, to make it fair for all users. You will be able to have access to the Internet within 200 metres of each of the hot spots.
This fabulous new service is being masterminded by the sub-contractors of the telecommunications company Grupo Abertis and will cost 15,000€ approximately. The man behind the project is Baldomero León, the person responsible for the re-invention of the town of Marbella. As if Marbella wasn’t already on the map, this marvellous and modern service will push the bar even further, adding 21st century connectivity to the luxury and charm of our region.
