As one of the world’s most respected musicians and songwriters, Bruce Springsteen could play in just about any country in the world and draw huge crowds, yet he has chosen to launch the European leg of his 2012 tour in Andalucía.
Tickets will go on sale on Wednesday 14th December for the first gig that will take place on 13th May next year at Seville’s Estadio Olimpico. Further Spanish dates will take place on 17th May in Barcelona, 2nd June in San Sebastian and 17th June in Madrid, to give many fans the chance to see this 62 year-old musical legend in action.
Born in New Jersey on September 23rd 1949, Bruce Springsteen achieved superstar status after the success of his 1975 album, Born to Run and its eponymous hit single and has, since then, built a reputation as the Godfather of American blue-collar rock and roll. In 2004 Rolling Stone magazine placed him 23rd in a list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and it is certainly true that The Boss has achieved a longevity attained by very few musical artists.
However it was his 1984 album, Born in the USA, that really introduced the world to the power of Springsteen and his E Street Band. The album’s title track is a perfect example of The Boss’s angry, disillusioned lyrics, a tribute to the veterans who returned from the Vietnam War to face extraordinary problems. Even now this landmark album is considered the source of the singer’s greatest songs: apart from the title track, Born in the USA spawned many hits, including Cover Me, I’m On Fire, Glory Days, Dancing In The Dark and My Hometown. For many, it remains the essential sound of the 1980s – albeit one with a social conscience!
One of the mainstays of Springsteen’s sound has been the E Street Band, many members of which joined him in 1972 when he signed his first record deal and still tour with him today. The central core consists of The Boss’s wife, guitarist Patti Scialfa who sometimes plays percussion, bassist Garry Tallent, Max Weinberg on drums, pianist Roy Bittan and – possibly most famously – Nils Lofgren and Steven Van Zandt (Little Steven) on lead and rhythm guitar.
The 2012 tour will showcase songs from Sprinsgteen’s lengthy career and – if the popularity of his most recent album, Working On A Dream is any indication of his enduring popularity – the opening event in Seville will be a night to remember.
